Filming Schedule

Filming Days

Saturday 9th November

filmed more close up shots

Wednesday 25th November

Going to our location to finish filming and  give ourselves enough footage to produce our final music video

Evaluation of our Progress

Our first draft was very dissapointing as we occured difficulties with a lot of different factors, these included the band members, equipment and the venue. We filmed our draft in a village hall. this wasn't our preferred location, but due to our poor planning and the time deadline that we had to stick to we were forced to use it. The lighting in the room was that of a very poor standard and it severely impacted the visual quality of the video.

We only did a one shot video which we were very dissapointed about, this was partly down to our own poor organisation and also the camera ran out of charge half way through recording. We also didnt have a very good plan or storyboard so this didnt help us in the process at all.

We realised that we let ourselves down on the draft and so we started to plan our new video for the next week. So we have made our second draft straight the way and we were very happy with how this turned out.

There were a few shots that we were not happy about and so we will need to make changes to these for our final video. Our last shot was to serious and our video throughout has been that of quite fun and had a happy feel about it. So the ending didn't really fit in with the rest of the video.

We encountered some difficulties with our filming day due to a lack of battery on the camera which limited us to only a few a hours of filming and we spent a lot of time charging the camera, this was not very time effective and was a frustrating situation.

We are planning on filming some more shots to ensure that we produce the highest quality video we can to achieve the best mark possible. We have the basis to produce a really good music video and now we just need to build on this to make sure we progress to a high standard.

First filming day:

Our first proper filming day took place on Tuesday the 5th of November.

We had pre planned our visit to our preferred location at Donnington Hall, Derbyshire. This gave us chance to gather all equipment that we needed. We were forced to source our equipment that we were going to use from friends and also local business that we tried to get in touch with. We managed to locate a microphone stand, and the actual microphone from the facilities of the college itself. But the other equipment we had to find ourselves and it proved to be slightly more challenging. After several negotiations and discussions we managed to rent a couple of very large professional speakers from a local audio business based in a nearby village called Broughton Astley. To link in with the talk of audio we also managed to get hold of small amplifier, we thought this would be good to have just for the visual benefit they would give the band setup.  Also we eventually managed to gain a keyboard along with the stand for the shooting of the video, we were thinking about using a set of drums but we went against the idea and therefore used the keyboard instead. One of our other friends had a guitar available to use for the video, this proved to be the one of the most focal instruments of the video. All of this meant we did gather all of the equipment we needed to make the band setup look professional  but also slightly unique . We tried to gain this uniqueness for the band through using the keyboard instead of a standard set of drums which tends to be used in 9/10 music videos you will see. We collectively believed that the uniqueness of the band setup would help to create a more interesting video that hopefully people will want to watch.

After we had collected all of the band equipment we needed, we had to work out how we were going to transport all of the equipment to the location itself. Also Donnington hall is actually quite a distance away from where myself and Kane Johnson both live. This meant that we had to take a day off from college to ensure that we had enough time to transport all of the equipment and ourselves to the location and back, meanwhile filming also. As both of us actually drive and have transport vehicles we managed to get to the location with little problem at all. In the early morning on the 5th of November we started to load the equipment into the two cars. We equally balanced the equipment and therefore the weight in both of the cars so we could spend as little time unloading the equipment as possible and in turn have maximum time to actually film the video.

After heading up the M1 Northbound to the Nottingham region. We reached our destination after travelling for around about thirty five to forty minutes. Unloading and setting up the gear we had to use properly in the way we wanted took another twenty to thirty minutes due to the fact that we wanted to make sure this was very accurate and correct to ensure that it looked as good as possible.
After we had the setup looking how we wanted it too, we then ran through the storyboard to ensure that we were all reading from the same script as the saying goes. This consisted of trying to picture what the shots would look like with the band setup in front of us.

After the preplanning for the video was all completed. We had already decided that we were going use a verse by verse method, by this I mean we filmed each verse separately  from a long shot camera position. Also we filmed the whole song in the main  reception first and then went onto shoot in the different rooms of the hall. We found during our shoot that the main reception was going to be the main setting due to the fact that it was the most unique and interesting, we also felt it boasted individuality, this therefore we believed would help our video to achieve its originality element.
After filming the whole video in the reception and the alternate rooms such as the Library and the main dining room. We collectively decided to take several close ups of our artists on a white background. We did this to highlight the characteristics of each of our band members, especially our Lead singer Bradley Dunkley.

During the filming of the music video we came across some unexpected problems with the technology we were using. A prominent example of this was our camera which is that of a Canon 500D which is known to be a very good camera with excellent pixel quality. Although the camera has a great reputation we had many troubles with the memory inside the camera and also the quick depression of the battery level. This therefore delayed us during the filming, this forced us to wait for the camera to charge back up to full working level again. With having to wait came with a problem of deteriorating light in the main reception due to the fact that the windows were our only proper source of pure natural light.

After filming for a period of six to eight ours, we decided to wrap the filming up for the day. At this current time it was close to eight'o clock. Therefore we decided to load the rest of the equipment up into the two vehicles and set off home.

After a stressful but productive day of filming I believe we learnt a great deal about the challenges
that need to be tackled whilst trying to film a music video of this kind. We took a valuable experience
out of our day filming which we will take on board to help us film again on another day in a better and more professional manor as possible. Overall we came out with some really special camera shots and a very good starting base to now build upon.

There would be a couple of things that I think collectively we would like to do different next time we film and that would be of ensure that the technology is reliable as possible but more important ensure that our lighting is consistent throughout the video.

Overall very happy with the first day of filming.

Evaluation of my Digpak.

This is my final Digipak.  After sending my poster to Mr Ford my media teacher, he gave me feedback to improve it. The following things were stated.
- In my draft the front cover was that of the blue stripe image that I created, after receiving feedback, it was clear that my opinion was different to everyone else's as people believed it would be better to have the title of the album and the band name on the front cover and have the blue striped image on the inside left of my cover.
- Also the writing on the spine was a bit too far up, and the feedback notified me to lower it slightly. So it look centralised.
- Resize the barcode as it looks out of sync with rest of the digipak.

Overall I believe my digipak came out fairly well as I stuck with a colour scheme of black blue and white which was also my colour scheme on my album poster, this gave the advertising campaign a element of continuity.  My aim for the digipak was for it too look slick and fresh where ever it was going to be placed. I believe personally that I achieved this as I am happy with the finished product.

During the production of this digipak I believe that I have learnt much about advertising in the music industry. One of the most vital things I have learnt is that of you MUST hit and please your target market as this is who will be buying it.

Doing a number of drafts and alternating the colour scheme, the layout and the style really helped when deciding which looked best. I went with the idea of try it and see what it looks like, this way I believe you can get a real sense of what everything looks like when you put it all together.

Evaluation of my poster.

This is my final poster. After sending my poster to Mr Ford my media teacher, he gave me feedback to improve it. The following things were stated.
- Make sure the band name is properly in the centre
- Also make the Date a focal point of the poster. For individuality.
- Ensure that the record logo is the right size in proportion to the poster itself.
- The most major change from that of my draft was that of the blue stripes on the poster as I was told to move it from the centre to up to the top of the page.
- Finally I was told to make the writing at the bottom of the page onto one line.

I worked on both my poster and my digipak at the same time. I intended to do this due to the fact that I thought it would help with trying to link the two products together and also benefit my element of continuity the two pieces.

On both my poster and my linking digipak I used the same image of the blue striped lines. But is used them in a variety of ways, for example as you can see on my poster I hung the image underneath the 'Empire Colours' text. But on the other hand I just used the image on my digipak own with a black background, this felt would help the element of continuity but also have some variety to it so both pieces didn't look exactly the same.

Overall I was very pleased with my final poster as a part of my advertising campaign for my album. I took on board all the feedback that I received from different personal. This was allowed to happen due to the fact that I went into the production of my poster with a very open mind. I believe this sort of mind-set has helped me immensely.

Location and schedule for our music video.

This was our main location for our video. We used the main reception as it had very distinctive features such as the very large spiral staircase. We filmed just in front of this, with the equipment at either side of our artists.

We also filmed in a couple of other rooms to add variety to our video. The second room we used was that of a large open space with two tall pillars in the centre of the room. During our shooting in this room we were forced to use natural light, thankfully it was a rather bright day and the windows in the building were very large, this I believe was due to the fact that it is a very old property that has been modernised but also has kept some of its old distinctive features such as the windows.

The other room we used was the library facility for the building, this therefore meant that the room was slightly darker and when we were filming in the library, the evening was closing in so this in turn meant that that we were forced to use artificial light in the form of several spotlights that were already in place in the building. Surprisingly the light that the spotlight provided was very good, and worked extremely well. As we focused the spotlights on our main lead singer, it made him stand out and highlighted him above the rest of the artists and overall the band setup.

We tried to use the features that the building possessed as we felt we must take every opportunity to make our video as original and unique as possible.

We did consider throughout the day using a couple of exterior shots due to the fact that the scenery was really picturese and nice. But we went against the idea and thought we would try to stick to the theme of continuity with whole video being inside.

Speakers for the music video.

We have managed to get in touch with a local audio company, and been working with them quite closely to get the best audio for our  music video possible.

The audio company is called Wilmslow Audio. They have provided us with some speakers that we can use for visual effects. The speakers are of very high spec so this therefore helps us to produce a music video of better quality.
